One of the great appeals of jacket potatoes is that they can be ready in a matter of minutes if you cook them in the microwave.

If you want the full experience, nothing beats the crispy skin of an oven-baked potato.

A good compromise is to cook the potato in the microwave until it’s almost cooked through and then pop it in to a preheated oven to finish it off for 30 minutes or so.

Whether you’re cooking yours in the oven or microwave, always wash the potato first then prick it all over with a fork.

For a really crispy skin, you can rub a little oil over it (for oven cooking).

For baking, prick the skins of whole potatoes with a fork, rub potatoes with oil for a soft skin or with salt for a crispy skin.

Bake in a pre-heated oven at 200°C for 45-60 minutes or until baked through.

Remove from oven and cut a cross into the potatoes, gently press the sides and top with filling or sauce of your choice.
